Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette's Flight to Varennes

The Flight to Varennes, occurring on the night of June 20-21, 1791, was a critical episode in the French Revolution. King Louis XVI, Queen Marie Antoinette, and their family attempted flee Paris to rally royalist support and regain control over revolutionary France. Disguised and traveling in a large, conspicuous carriage, their escape plan aimed for Montmédy near the Austrian Netherlands, but they were recognized and arrested in Varennes. This failed escape exposed the king's betrayal of the constitutional monarchy, radicalized public opinion, and significantly accelerated the revolution's momentum toward republicanism. The monarchy's downfall was hastened, leading to the king's eventual execution. #FlightToVarennes #FrenchRevolution #LouisXVI #MarieAntoinette #Varennes #RevolutionaryFrance #shorts[+] Show More
